What does it mean to be a sponsor in Canada?
Being a sponsor for your parents or grandparents is a commitment legal and financial in the long term. This involves:
- Support them financially by 20 years (or 10 years if you live in Quebec).
- Reimburse the government if they apply for social assistance during that time.

You must comply with all of these points:

Step 1: Receive invitation to apply
You can only apply if you were selected from the forms submitted in 2020. For the 2025 intake:
- 17,860 people will receive invitations from July 28, 2025.
- Check your email and spam folder.
- Deadline to submit your application: October 9, 2025, 11:59 pm ET.

You can include in the application:
- Parents or grandparents (biological or adoptive).
- Your current partners (married or in a common-law relationship).

- IMM 5771 — List of documents.
- IMM 1344 — Sponsorship Application and Agreement.

For the sponsored:
- Complete and sign the forms above.
